Choosing your donor bike
Generally speaking for normal road driving ,ease of build and economical purchase any of the Moto Guzzi California models (inc Jackal ,Stone, Bassa and Metal etc) represent the simplest option. The early models are carburetted with the later ones being fuel injected. Although electronically more complicated we have found the fuel injected models to be very reliable. Virtually any of the Moto Guzzi engines from 850cc to 1200cc can be fitted to a Triking, although our standard chassis installation is designed for the Moto Guzzi 5 speed gear box and twin shock rear suspension.
We have built several Triking’s using mono shock rear suspension however this involves significantly more work and cost than the standard Guzzi twin shock arrangement.
Virtually any Guzzi rear wheel can be used the only additional requirement being a functioning parking brake. The Triking standard parking brake installation comprises of a hydro mechanical calliper which replaces the existing Guzzi calliper.
Another important consideration is rear tyre choice obviously this is a safety critical area and it’s an advantage to choose a wheel size which has good tyre profile availability. Alternatively of course a Triking 15”rear wheel can be used which then accepts a standard tubeless car type tyre.
